Contact their Hosting Provider

If, after a week, you haven't heard from them, and your content is still on the site, you'll need to get a little more official. Most Web hosting providers have provisions against posting plagiarized content on domains on their service. So, if you get no response from the first letter, you'll need to ask the host to help you.

*Note* if the page is hosted on Blogger or Picassa, you need to take different action.

  1. Go to a domain name lookup service like Whois.net and look up the domain name of the violator.
  2. Find the hosting provider and go to their site to find contact information.
  3. Email the hosting provider with a polite letter asking them for help.

The letter I send looks something like this:

Dear HOST,

I am writing to you regarding the website COPIER'S DOMAIN. It is my understanding that you host this site. COPIER'S DOMAIN, has been stealing copyrighted materials from me. This content is written by me, and I own all rights to this content.

This is the copied content: URL OF COPY

This is the original work: URL OF ORIGINAL

You should be aware that the works you are reprinting are protected under the U.S. copyright and trademark laws and may not be reproduced and republished without permission. If you wish to contact the me to discuss the possibility of purchasing a license to reprint this content, please email: YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS

I have already contacted the owner of the site and did not receive a response. Please have this content removed as soon as possible. If you do not have this content removed, my next step will be to contact the my legal advisors to make them aware of this issue.

Sincerely, YOUR NAME

Make a note of this message, and either wait a week for a response, or proceed immediately to the step 5.
